Psoriasis

What is Psoriasis ?
Our immune system uses white blood cells to produce antibodies to fight bacteria and viruses. For Psoriasis sufferers, an auto-immune malfunction kick-starts the process of T-Cell production as if there was an infection or skin wound.

So, whereas the average person takes between 21-28 days for the normal healthy process of skin cell replacement, for Psoriasis sufferers, this process is speeded up dramatically to just 2-6 days. The new skin cells move too quickly to the skins surface before they have properly matured. This increased rate of skin cell production results in an accumulation of skin cells on the skin's surface.

Who Does Psoriasis Affect
Around 2% of the population suffer from Psoriasis, with men & women being affected equally. It can affect all age groups but most commonly people are in the range of 10 to 40. Unfortunately, for most sufferers, the condition can stay with them for life.

Can Psoriasis be Caught from another Person ?
Psoriasis can NOT be caught from another person.

It is believed that Psoriasis is found in our genes as there is family history of this medical condition for a significant number of sufferers. However, even for those with a genetic susceptibility to Psoriasis, it occurs only after a "trigger" of physical or emotional stress, certain drugs, injury to the skin or sore throat.
