Smelly Feet

If you suffer from Plantar Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating of the feet), smelly feet is no laughing matter. The good news is, we have tried and tested countless products and recommend the following to combat smelly feet.

Although your sweat is not on show, as it it with other forms of hyperhidrosis, sweaty feet is still a serious problem due to foot odour and the uncomfortable feeling of having soaking wet feet.

Having smelly feet, tends to make us feel unclean even though sufferers of sweaty feet tend to fastidiously wash their feet more than the average person.

Washing your feet at least once a day is essential, however with each foot having 250,000 sweat glands, hyperhidrosis of the feet tends to need additional help to alleviate the problem. Note: after washing, dry your feet carefully, including between the toes.

Plantar hyperhidrosis sufferers, produce many times more sweat than the average person, producing around 500 ml of sweat daily, from each foot. Surprisingly, sweat is actually odourless - the bacteria which naturally live on the skin, feed and multiply within the moist, warm, dark areas of excessive sweating. It is the bacterial process of breaking down the sweat and feeding upon it, which causes foot odour. However, some foods such as onions, garlic, curry and hot spices are thought to contain chemicals which can be excreted by the skin, in effect making your sweat itself have an unpleasant odour.

Excess stress on your feet can aggravate excessive sweating of the feet, so make sure your shoes fit properly and rest your feet as much as possible. Allow your feet to breathe as much as possible by wearing shoes made of breathable materials such as leather and taking off your shoes as much as possible - I know it's Catch 22, when you suffer from smelly feet, the last thing you want to do is take your shoes off, unless you're alone.

Don't wear the same shoes everyday, allow time for them to dry-out and air. It goes without saying, change into a clean pair of socks at least once per day - preferably Silver Socks.

If you suffer from smelly feet due to plantar hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), please read iontophoresis.

To BUY tried and tested products which successfully combat smelly feet, silver socks really work.
