Deodorant
Deodorants are products which are applied topically to mask the smell of body odour at the site where it is applied. Most manufacturers claim that their products effectively deodorise all day long. Yet if you suffer from excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), you, like me will have found that those mass-market deodorants do not deodorise "all day long".
Strangely enough, sweat is typically odourless, it’s the bacteria which cause body odour - they live on the skin and thrive in the hot, moist conditions of the sweaty areas, which cause body odour.
In the average person, only 1% of the body’s sweat is produced in the armpits, yet deodorants are mainly designed for this area because it is the most likely region to produce body odour. For those suffering from Axillae Hyperhidrosis, we sweat all over, but the armpits sweat so excessively that it is too hard for those mass-market deodorants to keep up.
Keeping armpits dry and smelling good is big business. Annually, billions are spent on antiperspirants and deodorants. These products, include deodorant roll-on, deodorant spray, solid deodorant, gel deodorant , deodorant powder, deodorant soap and deodorant cream.
With the average person only producing a small amount of armpit sweat each day, deodorant buying is actually done with smell and feel in mind, rather than the effectiveness to actually deodorise body odour. Some people like the “feel” of a wet, cooling, refreshing roll-on, others like the dry feel of aerosols. Remember all those adverts claiming to have cured the problem of white deodorant marks ? So, as you can see, the marketing departments of the major deodorant brands, have much more on their minds than deodorising the excessive amounts of sweat being produced by hyperhidrosis sufferers. After all, they concentrate on the 99% of people who sweat normally.
